The Posey Foundation, established in May 2004 by Carolina Panthers Wide Receiver Steve Smith and his wife, Angie, strives to promote the building of friendships between children who come from underprivileged and abused backgrounds in the Charlotte community. The foundation seeks to provide an outlet of fun and recreation for children through various special events involving Steve and his teammates on the NFL’s Carolina Panthers

The Posey Foundation was named in honor of Demetrius Posey, a childhood friend of Steve’s from Los Angeles, CA, whose life was cut short in a tragic automobile accident. Steve and Demetrius, along with Cincinnati Bengals Wide Receiver Chad Johnson, played football together at Santa Monica College prior to Steve transferring to the University of Utah in 1998. At the time of Demetrius’ death on March 22, 2003, he was working as a veterinarian assistant in Los Angeles.

Demetrius served as an inspiration to Steve in football and in life and will forever be a friend.

There are many worthy organizations in our community working to improve the lives of Charlotte youth, but very few are dedicated to developing friendships between children. Most non-profit endeavors for children attempt to provide for education and healthcare. We wanted The Posey Foundation to be focused solely on the development of friendships through recreation and activities that underprivileged and abused children do not have access to. To help us achieve our goals, we have chosen to work hand-in-hand with the following organizations:

• The Courage House – Youth Homes, Inc.
• Crisis Assistance Ministries
• Florence Crittenton Agency

We feel that by dedicating ourselves to just a few organizations we can work more intimately with each organization.

Our involvement with the kids in the Courage House started upon my arrival with the Carolina Panthers. Their ongoing work with abused children warms the heart and will provide us with many opportunities to show the kids the love and support they have been looking for.

The Posey Foundation is in the planning stages of a coat drive with Crisis Assistance Ministries this fall. Our goal is to make this a Charlotte-wide event in an effort to make this an annual philanthropic experience to benefit kids without the means to stay properly clothed throughout the winter.

The Florence Crittenton Agency is presently conducting an effort to raise capital to expand their facilities. The Posey Foundation will be giving to their organization in the form of monetary support and personal time to help them see their campaign through to fruition.

The Posey Foundation is constantly seeking opportunities to benefit the lives of children in the Charlotte community. We are considering a special Christmas time event to distribute gifts to children and a Family Reunion event this spring in a park in Charlotte. If you have ideas for possible events to benefit kids, please let us know.

Steve Smith has been blessed to achieve success in his football career with the support and love of his family. The Posey Foundation is a way for Steve and Angie to give back to the community. Funding for the Posey Foundation is possible through their personal funding and through endorsements and appearances.

If you or your company would like to explore ways to take part in The Posey Foundation’s unique mission, please contact Angie Smith (Executive Director) by emailing contactus@poseyfoundation.org.
